A Glimpse from the History of Scout Patches

Expand
  • Being a scout is more than rewarding. It is also a very fulfilling experience. To a scout, nothing beats the idea of being in a complete uniform and with all those scout patches. Unknown to many, the practice of wearing scouting patches has been around since 1911. Changes took place over the years, paving the way for newer designs. In fact, out of the 57 scouts patches that were released during that year, only 11 have not undergone changes up to this day. These include those for first aid, music, lifesaving and athletics among others.
  • On the contrary, scout patches that have been through some changes were mainly influenced by the interests and demands of the given era wherein they were applicable. However, others were dictated by the society itself. One classic example of a scouting patch that came about because of societal changes was “First Aid to Animals.” It was thereafter renamed in 1995 the "Veterinary Medicine" badge. Meanwhile, in other cases, multiple scouts patches have been integrated into just one. This was the case with the Animal Science badge, under which all the other scout patches pertaining to animal husbandry have been consolidated.

Over the years, changes in the design of scouting patches have also taken place. There are reasons for some of these changes, while others have changed for no particular reason. Take, for example, the badge for “Personal Health.” Originally designed with a heart, it now comes with an embroidered youth in a gym outfit.

Occasionally, special scouts patches are released in commemoration of a historical or otherwise important event. One classic example were the badges released on the organization’s 100th year. Accordingly, four badges were up for grabs, including Path finding, Tracking, Carpentry and Signaling. These special scout patches could be utilized as electives regardless of one’s desired rank.

Badges awarded to deserving scouts are more than just recognition for exemplary work done. They are symbolic of many virtues, including heroism, bravery, and patriotism. To kids who are just starting to appreciate the camaraderie of scouting, a scouting patch is the motivation that steers them to go further and offer more than what they think they can give.

Much like the memorable experiences scouts create, scouts patches have their own stories to tell. Each represents a piece of a history. Each patch is reminiscent of a glorious past. For all it's worth, a scout patch is an achievement.
